چکیده

Traffic analysis and anomaly detection have been extensively used to characterize network utilization as well as to identify abnormal network traffic such as malicious attacks. However, so far, techniques for traffic analysis and anomaly detection have been carried out independently, relying on mechanisms and algorithms either in edge or in core networks alone. In this paper we propose the notion of multi-level network resilience, in order to provide a more robust traffic analysis and anomaly detection architecture, combining mechanisms and algorithms operating in a coordinated fashion both in the edge and in the core networks. This work is motivated by the potential complementarities between the research being developed at IIT Madras and Lancaster University. In this paper we describe the current work being developed at IIT Madras and Lancaster on traffic analysis and anomaly detection, and outline the principles of a multilevel resilience architecture.

Increasing resilience of ATM networks using traffic monitoring and automated anomaly analysis

Systematic network monitoring can be the cornerstone for the dependable operation of safety-critical distributed systems. In this paper, we present our vision for informed anomaly detection through network monitoring and resilience measurements to increase the operators' visibility of ATM communication networks. We raise the question of how to determine the optimal level of automation in this s...

Contributions on detection and classification of internet traffic anomalies

The aim of this thesis is to develop a tool able of detecting, classifying and identifying trafficanomalies. Such occurrences are disturbing since they have potential to deviate networkoperations from their normal behaviour. Network Anomaly Detection Algorithm – NADA – isthe approach developed. The use of NADA and its accuracy are guaranteed by considering three axis of action: mult...

Sequential Anomaly Detection in Wireless Sensor Networks and Effects of Long Range Dependant Data

Abstract: Anomaly detection is important for the correct functioning of wireless sensor networks. Recent studies have shown that node mobility along with spatial correlation of the monitored phenomenon in sensor networks can lead to observation data that have long range dependency, which could significantly increase the difficulty of anomaly detection. In this paper, we develop an anomaly detec...

Traffic Scene Analysis using Hierarchical Sparse Topical Coding

Analyzing motion patterns in traffic videos can be exploited directly to generate high-level descriptions of the video contents. Such descriptions may further be employed in different traffic applications such as traffic phase detection and abnormal event detection. One of the most recent and successful unsupervised methods for complex traffic scene analysis is based on topic models. In this pa...

Moving dispersion method for statistical anomaly detection in intrusion detection systems

A unified method for statistical anomaly detection in intrusion detection systems is theoretically introduced. It is based on estimating a dispersion measure of numerical or symbolic data on successive moving windows in time and finding the times when a relative change of the dispersion measure is significant. Appropriate dispersion measures, relative differences, moving windows, as well as tec...
